Baby Food at 9–12 Months

Between 9 and 12 months, your baby takes a major developmental leap. Self-feeding begins in earnest, family mealtimes become shared, and the variety of safe textures expands dramatically. This stage is as much about developing independence and motor skills as it is about nutrition.

🎉

A big milestone: joining the family table

At 9–12 months, your baby can join family meals. Offer soft versions of what you eat — minus the added salt and sugar. Shared mealtimes build positive associations with food, accelerate language development, and make your life considerably easier.

Excellent finger foods for 9–12 months

Finger foods develop the pincer grasp, hand-eye coordination, and chewing ability. Offer pieces that dissolve easily or can be squished between fingers — never hard, round, or sticky.

🥦

Steamed Vegetables

Broccoli florets, carrot batons, green bean pieces — steamed until they squish easily between your fingers. Cruciferous vegetables also introduce flavours that support lifelong vegetable acceptance.

🍞

Toast & Bread Fingers

Lightly toasted wholemeal bread cut into finger-sized strips. Top with mashed avocado, cream cheese, or smooth nut butter (thinly spread). Low salt bread only.

🧀

Soft Cheese Cubes

Mild cheddar, mozzarella, or Edam cut into small cubes. Full-fat, pasteurised. Excellent calcium source. Avoid processed cheese slices — too high in salt.

🍝

Soft Pasta Pieces

Well-cooked pasta shapes (penne, fusilli, macaroni) tossed in a simple tomato sauce with no added salt. Pasta is an excellent hand-feeding food — easy to pick up and dissolves quickly.

🍳

Soft-Scrambled Egg

Scrambled egg cooked gently without butter or salt — soft, moist, and easy to pick up. A complete protein source and one of the most nutrient-dense foods for this age.

🫐

Halved Soft Fruit

Blueberries (halved), soft ripe mango pieces, banana slices, peeled soft pear. Grapes and cherry tomatoes must always be quartered lengthwise — never whole.

Choking hazards to avoid

⚠️

Shape is more important than hardness

Round, cylindrical, or sticky foods are the highest-risk shapes for infant choking — regardless of how soft they are. Always cut round foods (grapes, cherry tomatoes, blueberries) into quarters. Cut sausages and frankfurters lengthwise, not into rounds.

  • Whole grapes — always quarter lengthwise
  • Whole cherry tomatoes — always quarter
  • Whole blueberries — halve or quarter
  • Whole nuts and seeds
  • Whole hot dogs or sausage rounds
  • Large pieces of raw apple or hard pear
  • Thick blobs of nut butter (spread thinly only)
  • Popcorn — until at least 4 years old
  • Hard raw carrot — steam until it squishes
  • Honey — still prohibited until 12 months

Meals, portions, and structure

Three meals per day

By 9 months, most babies have settled into three meals per day with 1–2 small snacks. Aim for each meal to contain a carbohydrate, a protein, and some fruit or vegetables. Continue breast milk or formula: approximately 500–600ml per day alongside solid meals.

Typical portion size

A 9–12 month old's stomach is roughly the size of their fist. Offer small portions on a plate and let them self-regulate. Never force more food when they indicate they are full — responsive feeding builds healthy appetite regulation for life.

🥄

Let them make a mess

Self-feeding is inevitably messy. Suppressing the mess also suppresses the learning. Babies at this stage need to touch, smear, and explore food with their whole hand — this sensory exploration is a core part of accepting a food. Use a coverall bib and a splash mat and embrace it.
